A strange extraterrestrial race known as the Bydo has declared war on humanity. After suffering the loss of wave after wave of enemy fighters in Bydo territory, Earth has dispatched a solitary commander commanding a tiny armada into the heart of the Bydo Empire to stop the conflict. Initially a side-scrolling shooter, the R-Type series has been remade as a turn-based strategy game called R-Type Command. This version retains the side-scrolling view, but the control scheme has been changed to a hexagonal grid. Players have access to more than 100 different troops to utilize and a wide variety of armaments that may be unlocked and used against hostile ships. After each mission, upgrades, weaponry, and ships become available for purchase and can be employed in subsequent tasks. Now it’s up to the players to decide which grid to assault and whatever ship and armaments they wish to deploy. The player will fight in massive boss battles after each level, using their available ships and weapons against increasingly difficult foes. During the invasion on Earth, players not only have the option of playing as Earth Forces, but they can also choose to play as the Bydo’s. In addition, online capabilities via Ad-Hoc enable human opponents to engage in head-to-head combat.
