The gameplay of Sonic Rivals 2 is similar to the original game, which consisted of racing another character to the finish line of each stage in a platforming world rendered in three dimensions. The characters can still pick up various power-ups scattered over the scene to strengthen their attacks against their opponent. You also face the same challenge as your opponent in the Boss stages: you must defeat the Boss before they do. Players will continue to acquire cards even after completing a variety of tasks. The selection of playable characters has been expanded to include Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, Metal Sonic and Tails, Espio the Chameleon, and Rouge the Bat. Previously featured characters are Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Silver, and Metal Sonic. With the addition of the Freeplay option, you can re-experience levels you have already beaten without having to compete against another player. Several new play types, including Knockout, Ring Battle, Race, King of the Hill, Capture the Chao, and Tag, have been added to the multiplayer challenges.
